Description

One rear brake caliper rebuild kit: Rebuilds one rear caliper. If you need to rebuild both rear calipers, you’ll need to buy a quantity of 2. (KIT DOES NOT INCLUDE CALIPER….RUBBER SEALS ONLY!!)

Fits:

Year: 1984-87

Model: All

KIT CONTAINS:

– Outer Piston Boot

– Piston Inner Seal

– Piston Outer Seal

– E-brake adjust bolt inner seal

– E-brake adjust bolt outside seal

– Caliper air vent nipple

Problem:

If your rear brake caliper is leaking, the parking brake doesn’t work, or the rear brakes work only well when you have new pads and then as the pads wear the rears are almost non-existent, then most likely you need to PROPERLY rebuild your rear calipers with a COMPLETE REBUILD KIT.

Don’t waste your time rebuilding your calipers with a kit that doesn’t include the INTERNAL PISTON SEAL. This is the most critical seal for your rear brakes. The parking brake adjusts the brake height and the piston seal is what lets that happen.

NO ONE on Ebay or anywhere that I know of sells a rear caliper rebuild kit that includes an INTERNAL PISTON SEAL. Yes you can be cheap and get a partial kit that excludes that internal piston seal for $30, then you’ll be back to square one when you realize it did not fix the problem. If you want your caliper to work like new you need to rebuild the INNER PISTON!!!

Heck the rebuilt calipers you see for sale DO NOT rebuild the internal piston and replace that seal. They DO NOT open up the internal piston and they don’t replace the piston. The piston is discontinued. If you see someone selling a “rear piston” for an 88 fiero, and it doesn’t specify the left or right side then it isn’t a rear piston because rears are side dependent (rear pistons have different screw directions for the parking brake lever inside), it’s a front piston which will not work.

If you buy a rebuilt caliper chances are it will be no better than the one you have now. If it doesn’t leak, then it almost certainly will not correctly adjust the caliper as the pads wear because again that internal caliper is what controls that. I went through 3 rebuilt 88 left rear calipers that kept leaking and failing within a year (and worked poorly in the interim) before rebuilding my caliper myself with this complete kit. My rear brakes now work like new.

Don’t waste your time buying a cheap caliper rebuild kit and then pat yourself on the back. You just wasted your money and your time as you’ll most likely be doing the entire job again when you realize your rear brakes don’t work and don’t adjust properly.

In response to some questions on how best to disassemble the internal piston to replace the seal, I’ve added a new tech article with pictures and instructions. It was written using an 88 piston, but the procedure is the same for the 84-87 piston as well even thought it looks slightly different. Link to the article below…
